Coral Theatre

Located near the seaside of Hainan, looking to the ocean, the project is intended to create a place for people to gather and appreciate the performance as well as the sounding nature environment. Our design is inspired by coral reef both acoustically, in terms of form, and socially, in terms of organization. Coral reefs are underwater structures built by tiny sea animals. They are the most diverse habitats on the planet. In stony corals, also known as hard corals, the coral polyps produce a skeleton composed of calcium carbonate to strengthen and protect the soft, lively organisms that sustain the vitality of the habitats. In the design, we envision a similar soundproof shell to protect the lively civic activities happening inside.

Bird eye view
Coral reefs are also co-habit ecosystems of various activities and species. Similarly, we envision a municipal building that is not only a place of authority (the power of government), but also a civic space and a lively social ecosystem, which hosts various activities and people from different races, cultures, genders and ages. We want to create an open space that will give an impression of being close to people and being willing to hear people’s opinion through using the transparent exterior material and the welcoming covered sunken plaza.

Also, We would like to emphasize the concept of civic space and equality in the design of the theatre itself. In this part, we use ancient Roman auditoriums as our reference ("place for hearing"). The fan-shape open stage provides a good view into the proscenium opening for the performance. The auditorium also has a great circular shape for municipal conferences. Every audience member feels close to the lecturers and can hear the speech clearly.

There are 224 seats in total (with all arm chairs). First row and last row use removable chairs, which will provide the flexibility for wheelchair users to choose their seats. The constant rise formula with first row head clearance provides unobstructed vision.

Bamboo Floating Village Center

The concept of clusters on the water is inspired by the existing phenomenon of the autonomously formed villages on the lake. We take the adaptability and diversity from there and propose to improve current situation by building clusters as unified structures that are well organized, properly accessible with well-distributed programs. The cluster is composed of 20 units, all together completing a circular configuration.

All the units are literally movable like boats, as in they can freely switch their positions within the cluster, or even move away to somewhere else when certain needs emerge. The units are integrated by a standardized framework and well connected with each other; in the meanwhile they each function independently.

Shenzhen Box Community Centre

The Floating Box is a community centre situated at the heart of the newly developed district in Shenzhen, providing office spaces for the local government as well as activity spaces for the public. The design intends  to promote interactions and cohesion between government and citizen .

Beginning with an investigation on the scale of space based on Edward Hall’s theory of the human dimensions, the design develops a series of spaces suitable for various scales of use, close conversations, group discussions and public events.

Section model

The building consists of two halves, the ‘urban roof’ which houses the offices and rooms for the local authorities, and the ‘urban playscape’, an open landscape of differently sized pocket plazas with varying depths in relation to the streets. The public are invited into the ‘playscape’ sheltered by the ‘roof’, allowing organised events to take place throughout the year. The variety of in-between spaces of the ‘roof’ and ‘playscape’ are suitable for a range of different activities from outdoor performance to social dance. Where the ‘roof’ meets the ground, public spaces extend into the building, welcoming the local residents in.

Pocket plaza space

Through architecture, local authorities are no longer isolated from the public, encouraging more understanding and building more trust. The private spaces of the authorities and the public spaces of the local activities are no longer separated, but closely intertwined.

Grain Research
&
Community Hub

The project is a facility dedicated to the research on agricultural grains and promotion of public awareness on global food security. There are two opposing conditions to fulfill - the requirements for privacy in the research labs; and the need to be inviting for the public in the outreach spaces. Our design integrates the two functions by creating a solid research core where laboratories are protected and wrapping a series of public accessible spaces around.

︎ 从街道看建筑 ,perspective from the street

The entrance into the public space begins on the ground level, drawing people directly in from the busy junction. Their experiences through the grain nursery and various exhibition spaces are seamless as they ascend gradually. Through dedicated openings, the public is able to directly observe the work of the researchers in the core while the researchers are also able to gain access to every exterior floor from within the core.

The building also houses a communal kitchen on the ground level where locals are encouraged to cook together. Grains harvested onsite are also dispensed to the public within these kitchens, promoting interactions through culinary activities.

HUTONGism

Reflex-arc curated and installed "HUTONGism – Urban House in Beijing" in Rudolph Hall, Yale University. The exhibition featured our research on the hutongs in Beijing. Besides photos, drawings and models, the transition of the spaces as one walks through also forms part of the experience of the exhibition.

Front view of the exhibition

With the gallery space limited to 4.3 meters in width, we inserted a "floating house" into the centre of the space, leaving 1-meter wide "alleyways" on either side. The translucent fabric is reminiscent of the silhouette of the traditional courtyard houses (siheyuan) that are native to the hutongs. Visitors will also experience an impression of daily life in hutong as they step into the "alleyways" where they will be immersed in the series of photos and videos of the unique spaces and elements in the hutong.

Front view of the exhibition

Upon entering the main exhibition space, a sense of intimacy and closeness is experienced, wrapped by translucent fabric. The translucency not only created a sense of enclosure but also maintained a connection to the space outside. Various types of activities can happen within this small space as it was reconfigured for different functions. It is an exhibition gallery with pedestals, a lecture space with chairs, and a social space with a long table at its centre. The flexibility in its space is reflective of the hutongs where the same space is used for recreation, pop-up retail and restaurant extensions at different times of the day and year.

Alleyway of photos and video

The smoothness and translucency of flex fabric is a distinct contrast to the rough texture of the brutalist architecture of Rudolph Hall. Metaphorically, it is a conversation between the formal, which is the Rudolph Building, and the informal, which is the urban house in Beijing. The materiality is the part of the concept that resonates with the exhibition contents.
